The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India published a draft regulatory amendment on 17 October 2026 proposing a ban on added sucrose and fructose in food products for infants up to six months old.[1] The draft modifies the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020.[2] Under the existing 2020 regulations, sucrose and fructose were permitted for use in these products within prescribed limits.[3] FSSAI stated early exposure to added sugars is a public health concern. The regulator linked this exposure to risks of unhealthy long term dietary habits and childhood obesity.[4]
